Like it or loathe it, BBM is a hugely popular IM service with a large, active, userbase. Sunil Lalvani, managing director for BlackBerry India, apparently confirmed in an interview with IBN Live that BlackBerry Messenger will launch on Android in the next two months.
When seeking to clarify his comments, and whether BBM would be available before the end of the September, IBN Live noted that Lalvani’s “response was in the affirmative.”
The current version of BBM, version 7.0.1 released March 11 2013, has around 60 million users, but this pales next to the WhatsApp figures of around 200 million users. Opening up BBM to Android and iOS could be the only wan Blackberry can prevent users leaving in droves toward more cross-platform services.
